SHIELA Brown may be 80, but that doesn't stop her pulling on her running shoes and heading to the gym every week.

The fitness fanatic believes age is no barrier when it comes to exercising.

She said: "It does not matter how old you are, you can keep fit.

"I have arthritis in both my knees and my back and I am sure exercise helps. I think everyone should try a little exercise. It is better than sitting around and stiffening up.

"You do not have to overdo it. Any exercise, no matter how little or small, is better than anything else."

Mrs Brown is one of the 20 over-50s who attend the Alvingham Road Day Centre in Scunthorpe every Thursday to use the gym and take part in a circuit training class.

The former council worker and taxi driver said: "I led street lighting have been coming here for about 15 months and I like it. It makes me feel good doing the exercise.

"I also enjoy the social side of it, as I meet lots of lovely people. We do have a laugh."

Other fitness fans include Nancy Baker, 65, of Warley Road, Scunthorpe, who has been attending the gym for two years.

She said: "I like keeping fit. I did not fancy going to the leisure centre, but I heard about this place in the paper and thought I would give it a go."

June Bolderson, 73, travels from Gunness every week to attend the classes.

She said: "It's quite a way to come, but it is worth it. We have fun and we enjoy keeping fit and Paul Twidale is a great teacher."

Her friend Margaret Eyre, 67, of Scunthorpe, said: "I have been coming here for 18 months and I love the social side of it. We are one big happy family here."

Marion Redfern, 62, of Ashby, said the class has really helped her body stay healthy.

She said: "I had a problem with a frozen shoulder and it made it difficult for me to move it.

"But since I have been coming here it has improved tremendously.

People should not be afraid of exercising because they may injure themselves and being active can improve things."

The gym celebrated its second birthday this week.

Councillor Pauline Carlile, cabinet member of adult social care, said: "The gyms are a great way to ensure people keep supple and active as they get older.

"The gym at Alvingham Road Day Centre is popular and people enjoy attending as it keeps them active and enables them to meet new friends."

About 20 regulars use the gym, which is only open to people over 50 years old.

Those interested in joining should call (01724) 277906. Each session costs Pounds 2.50. There is also a gym at Tofts Road Day Centre. Both opened at the same time.

Walk! I don't have a car, so I do quite a lot of walking.

Remember: try not to overdo it - any exercise is better than nothing.
